Point of view of a platform : Ricardo Iglesias (Nyx Channel)

NYX Channel is a Spanish distributor of classic cinema in high quality formats. In addition to selling a large amount of movies, NYX also offers restoration or subtitling services. Nyxchannel.com is also a VOD platform.

What does MIFC represent to you? 

The MIFC represents the world meeting place for all the companies focused on the classic cinema. It is our first visit to the market, but we are pretty sure that it will be very helpful to improve our international strategy. We have just launched our VOD platform of classic movies, so we would like to show this internationally along with the rest of services: authoring, restoration, subtitling, etc. We would like to attend the MIFC every year because it's a major event.

Which importance have classic films in Spain? In terms of distribution and box office? 

In Spain the situation is a bit strange. On the one hand there is much lover of classic cinema. However, that is not reflected by the supply side. The distribution of this type of cinema is limited to a few movies per week on some television channels (public and private) and little bit else. There are also specialized cinemas, but we consider that its margin of improvement is still very large. Supply and demand need to be found more easily. That is why our project was born, also worldwide, because we firmly believe that quality, extras and packaking are the keys to improve revenues in all windows. In fact, we are doing it that way in our own distribution channel: nyxchannel.com 

In which way do audiences consume more classic films? 

In Spain the audiences consume classic films mostly through tv channels. For free. Also, although on a smaller scale, in cinemas and platforms on demand. As I said before, the room for improvement is very large. 

How the Spanish government helps restoration and distribution of classic films? 

Government support for these kind of projects is practically nil. In Spain, the projects focused on classic cinema are carried out mainly by entrepreneurs or investors. For instance, we finance ourselves our restorations with some help from, mostly private, international sponsors. And they're done little by little in high quality by our own team. We started with Horror, Western and Noir because that's what we had in our catalogue but we want to expand, maybe find some partnership with other catalogues. Right now, we have 500 movies that we sell all accross the world, from TV channels to close circuits, in countries like United Kingdom, USA and France. At the root of Nyx Channel, there is a dub company which had a vision. For now, the platform we also own is in french, english and, of course spanish. But in the new few years, we want to open it to german, portuguese, etc...
