Gian Luca Farinelli


Gian Luca Farinelli has been the director of the Cineteca di Bologna since 2000. In 1986 he created with Nicola Mazzanti the first festival dedicated to the history of cinema, Il Cinema Ritrovato. He supervised the creation of the first Italian film restoration school and the first laboratory, L'Immagine Ritrovata. The laboratory has been active since 1992 and has been collaborating with major film institutions around the world.
He is internationally recognized as one of the most important experts in the restoration and diffusion of heritage cinema. He played a leading role in the creation of the Association of European Cinematheques and in the creation of the World Cinema Foundation. In 2014 he was awarded the Silver Medallion at the Telluride Film Festival, in 2021 he received the Raymond Chirat Award. In April 2022 he was appointed President of the Festa del Cinema di Roma and is a member of the Pathé Board of Directors.



Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna is an internationally renowned film archive, founded in the 1960s, has been a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) since 1989 and of the Association of European Cinematheques (ACE) since 1991.
The archives of the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna contain a collection of more than 80,000 films, including 16 and 35 mm positives and negatives, offering a representation of the entire history of cinema, from the silent era to the mid-1990s.
Over the years, the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna has expanded its projects and activities, which include the conservation and restoration of films, the organisation of the Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, the distribution of films from the history of cinema, the daily programming of three movie theaters, daily screenings, didactic activities professional training, editorial publications, design and organisation of film exhibitions, a library and numerous non-film archives (photography, graphics, art), as well as important collections such as the Chaplin, Pasolini, Blasetti, Renzi, Olmi, Robinson, Soldati collections...
The Cineteca's L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory is known throughout the world for its restoration of great masterpieces by Leone, Chaplin, Pasolini, the Lumière brothers, Visconti, Murnau, Renoir, De Sica, Fellini, Rossellini and many others.
Cineteca is also a partner of The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project for the restoration, diffusion and conservation of film heritage in geographical areas where lack of training, investment or technology has prevented the preservation of this heritage over the years.
