Right owner's and distributors' line up / part 1 & 2

PART 1 - Thursday, October 14. Six film professionals presented their projects for restorations and other re-releases of classic films in 4K during this first part of the line-up organized by the International Classic Film Market (MIFC).

On the occasion of this 9th edition of the MIFC, six film right-owners and distributors came to present their program for the year 2021 as well as their upcoming projects. Polish Cinema Classic opened the ball by unveiling a new box set of 13 restored films (documentaries, features and shorts) by Polish director Wojciech Jerzy Has. After mentioning the upcoming restorations (Si j’étais un espion by Bertrand Blier, Ces messieurs de la santé by Pierre Colombier, L’Aventurier by Marcel L’Herbier…) Pathé teams announced their new strategy to promote their catalog by opening up to collaborations with specialized distributors for theatrical distribution of their heritage films. They have announced a first collaboration with Splendor Films for the re-release of Jacques Doillon's restored film Un sac de billes, scheduled for November. Gaumont, for their part, lifted the veil on their annual restorations of Alain Resnais's The War is over, Jean Renoir's The Lower Depths, Henri Verneuil's Le Boulanger de Valorgue or Louis Feuillade's Judex and René Clément's The Day and the Hour. Their big announcement? A future partnership with Malavida Films which was decided during the MIFC around the rights of Louis Malle's filmography for a big retrospective to come. TF1 Studios paid tribute to the great Jean-Paul Belmondo. Our national "Bébel" was the star of a promotional video from the 60's of The Man from Rio that was as funny as it was moving, in which he spoke to the audience and told the story of the film with his legendary glibness. The company has restored this cult adventure comedy by Philippe de Broca, which inspired Steven Spielberg in the making of Indiana Jones, in a new 4K prestige version. StudioCanal returned to its highlights of 2021 with the restorations of Joseph Losey's The Servant, Bertrand Tavernier's Coup de torchon, James Cameron's Terminator 2 or the re-release of Mulholland Drive for the 20th anniversary of David Lynch's masterpiece. The studio also gave a foretaste of 2022 by highlighting its future restorations: Walter Hill's The Driver, Orson Welles' The Trial or Jim Jarmush's Ghost Dog - The Way of the Samurai. Without forgetting the big work that is the 4K post-production of Christophe Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf, a great first in the field of restoration, supervised by Christophe Gans himself and part of his original team. Les Films du Jeudi came to highlight Martin Roumagnac, by George Lacombe, the only film to feature Marlene Dietrich and Jean Gabin on screen. Finally, Cinématographique Lyre defended its restoration of the film noir classic Francesco Rosi's Hands over the city, one of their projects for 2021.

PART 2 - Ten publishers et distributors came to unveil their catalogs of restorations and re-releases of heritage films in 4K during this second panel of the International Classic Film Market (MIFC) which took place Friday morning.

On the occasion of this 9th edition of the MIFC, ten cataloguers and distributors came to discover their creations of the year 2021 and their upcoming projects that highlight heritage cinema. During this second line-up, the AFCAE showed the restoration of a forgotten film by Jean Grémillon, The Woman who dared. On their side, the ADRC detailed a future retrospective, in four films, around Jean Vigo with the collaboration of Malavida, in addition to a work with Les Acacias on a retrospective on Dino Risi in partnership with the Cinémathèque française. Italian cinema was also featured in the Carlotta Films catalog, which highlighted restorations of two neo-realism classics, Luigi Comencini's Misunderstood and Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D. Carlotta also mentioned two important upcoming 4K restorations, Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle rouge and Pandora with Ava Gardner. Tamasa came back, among other things, on their famous Hammer retrospective which arrives a year late because of the Covid-19 pandemic with the cult Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde. Then, The Acacias highlighted the restorations of two feature films by Joseph Losey, The Servant, a film noir scripted by Harold Pinter, and Mr. Klein, a cold thriller set against the backdrop of deportation and starring Alain Delon. Malavida, which reaffirmed the importance of building bridges between heritage cinema and generations, unveiled in its promotional video the galvanizing images of Reprise, Joachim Trier's first feature film, which will be released in theaters on October 20, 2021. They then mentioned an upcoming retrospective in tribute to Jacques Doillon in which his very first film, Les doigts dans le tête, will be restored. The French distributor and publisher also announced that it will launch the Malavida Inovative European Library (Miel) on January 1, 2022, a device dedicated to the rediscovery and distribution in France of forgotten or invisible works in theaters and DVD. This initiative was set up in collaboration with NFA Národní filmový archiv from Prague, directed by Michal Bregant, and NFI National Film Institut Archive Hungary, directed by György Ráduly, and should be extended to other European countries. Lost Films presented the restoration of two Mike Nichols films for the summer of 2022, but it was Jean-Baptiste Thoret's long-awaited documentary on The Deer Hunter, titled Michael Cimino - An American Mirage, that attracted interest. At Solaris, there was a hypnotic trailer for the restoration of Federico Fellini's Satyricon, scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2022, as well as a trailer for Marcel Carné's Juliette, or key of dream, and finally the crazy road trip Doctor Chance with the late Joe Strummer. Le Théâtre du Temple team proposed a wide range of films stamped Laurel and Hardy... But it is its retrospective around the cinema of Fritz Lang that has caught the attention with three great films entirely restored: Clash by NightWhile the City Sleeps and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. Finally, Ciné-Sorbonne is dusting off John Carpenter's Christine, adapted from the horror master Stephen King. This new restoration will be released in time for Halloween 2021 with, as a bonus, a new trailer and a new poster reinvented for this new release.
