A romantic and adventurous film set during the German occupation in Rhodes.
During World War II, a lieutenant of the Royal Navy, Aris Galanos, arrives in Italian-occupied Rhodes on a secret mission. He takes the place of the Italian officer Giovanni Retsini and, as captain Giovanni, now helps the residents of the island as much as possible. At the same time, he also falls in love with Anna Roditi, a member of the Resistance. The revelation of Aris’s activity also leads to Anna’s arrest, who is about to be court-martialed. The capitulation of Italy, however, averts such an unpleasant development. With the end of the war and the unification of the Dodecanese islands with Greece, Aris returns to Rhodes to live there forever with his beloved Anna Roditi.
Anna Roditi is one of the first post-war Greek productions shot on the island of Rhodes, and the first film of the Anzervos company, which was the second most important post-war Greek production company, after Finos Film. Its patriotic story, romantic subplot, and views of the island's spectacular rugged scenery were enthusiastically greeted by Greek audiences, and the film was a huge box-office hit.
Anna Roditi was physically restored as part of the Lumiere Project, 1991-1995 supported by the MEDIA Programme, by the Greek Film Archive and Stiftung Deutsche Kinematek. The film was restored from an incomplete negative and parts of prints assembled from various sources in Greece and abroad. The majority of lost material was found with and bought from private collectors in Australia.
