Gambler, con man and master thief George Manolescu gets caught between two women:On the run, he meets the fiery Cleo, who goads him into committing crimes. The pair of crooks goes on the loose until they are found by Cleo's ex-lover. Furious with jealousy, he beats George up, sending him to the hospital - where he meets the kind nurse Jeanette. She nurses him back to health after his serious injury and begins to purify him. George falls in love with Jeanette and is in turn stalked and reported by the jealous Cleo. On New Year's Eve, which George spends with the unsuspecting Jeanette, it comes to a showdown with the police...

Manolescu



Born in Kiev in 1891, Victor Tourjansky initially trained as a theatre actor, studying under Constantin Stanislavski. In 1914 he began directing, adapting works by Pushkin (Symphony of Love and Death) and Dostoyevsky (The Brothers Karamazov) for the screen. Fleeing Russia after the October 1917 revolution, he settled in France, where he continued his career, making both melodramas (The Song of Triumphant Love) and adventure films (Michel Strogoff). In 1927, he was one of the assistants on the set of Abel Gance's Napoléon.

Information on the restoration
Digital Restoration obtained from two incomplete original negatives with flash titles from the Bundesarchiv and other surviving production elements. The restoration aimed the first theatrical distribution version of the film, which was supposed to be lost since the end of WW2.
