Jöel Chapron is a specialist in Central and Eastern European cinema.
A lexicographer at Dictionnaires Le Robert, he became a specialist in Eastern European cinema and was responsible for this area at Unifrance from 1995 to 2022. A Russian interpreter and translator, he has subtitled more than 120 films, collaborated on several Franco-Russian co-productions, written numerous articles (Le Monde, Le Film français, Les Cahiers du cinéma, Positif, etc.), given lectures in France and abroad, produced DVD bonus features, written books published in France (L’Exploitation cinématographique en France with Priscilla Gessati, Moscou et Saint-Pétersbourg mis en scènes with Christel Vergeade) and Russia, and contributed to collective works (Dictionnaire mondial du cinéma; Cinéma russe contemporain, (r)évolutions; 25 ans de cinéma français à l’étranger; Les Arts russes et soviétiques en France au XXe siècle: exporter l’image de soi). Foreign correspondent for the Cannes Film Festival for nearly thirty years, associate professor at the University of Avignon (2009-2016), he is currently an associate researcher there. Joël Chapron was made an Officer of Arts and Letters in 2021.
