Jan de Vries is the co-founders and artistic directors of KINO Rotterdam, a six-screen independent cinema located in the heart of Rotterdam.
With a degree in history and a minor in film, he discovered his love for cinema while working at video stores, a student cinema, and an arthouse distributor in Amsterdam, before having the opportunity to create the kind of cinema they had dreamed of building in the Netherlands’ second-largest city — a welcoming place where they themselves would enjoy spending time.
They present a mix of premieres, classics, and special events. They program what they love and aim to share that enthusiasm in an informal way — both through their promotion and by introducing most of their classic screenings to provide context and explain their choices.
They strive to offer a complete night out at the cinema, focusing not only on the cinematic experience but also on comfort food and a wide selection of drinks. They make no distinction between “cinema” and “movies,” showing the same reverence for Dune as they do for Woman in the Dunes.
