As Ilhas Encantadas

de Carlos Vilardebó , Portugal, France , 1965, 1h30

This luminous and dreamlike film is the only feature by Carlos Vilardebó, a Portuguese-French director who had previously won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1961 with LA PETITE CUILLÈRE. Based on Herman Melville's novel of the same name, ENCHANTED ISLES is a third-person account of a 19th century maritime adventure, narrated by actor Pierre Vaneck, who plays the role of first mate Manuel Abrantes, who discovers two castaways while exploring a little-known volcanic archipelago where giant tortoises abound: the widow Hunila (Amália Rodrigues), and a French sailor (Pierre Clémenti), whose inability to communicate because they speak different languages underlines an unlikely love story. Fado singer Amália Rodrigues in one of her greatest and perhaps least-known film roles. Film to be presented in a restored digital copy by Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema, under the context of the FILMar project, which is part of the EEAGrants 2020-2024 financial support mechanism.
