The wife of a wealthy industrialist, Maria-José is the mistress of an intellectual and university professor, Juan. During a car ride with him, she runs over a worker on a bicycle and flees the scene. While her lover is distraught by this tragedy, she fears only public scandal and worries about the insinuations of a blackmailer, Rafà. Deeply tormented, Juan becomes aware of his own cowardice through contact with the students: he resigns from the university and asks his mistress to go to the police with him to confess their responsibility in the cyclist's death.
